Dear Friends,
It’s Thursday. My to-do list is still long, but I’m sitting here quietly in my living room while some sweet college girls do homework in various parts of the house. My heart is full (not to be confused with rested lol) because today I fought myself for the small victory.
You see, I was challenged this week by a mentor to “find a Sabbath/rest day and guard it.” We were talking through the “season” (yay for overused words of today’s culture) I’m currently in and the one I’m headed into. It’s going to be the best. And the hardest. And the longest. And the shortest. And the most full of emotion season I’ve probably ever had. Yes, I realize I say this with every season but you feel me right? This mentor has years in the business on me and each time we meet he hits me with a little nugget of truth that both of us know isn’t so much from him as it is a reminder/affirmation of what God’s teaching me.
Rest.
Plan for it. Make room for it. Guard it. Work at it.
Rest.
So, with the changing of schedules and meetings that need to be taken care of – Thursdays are my new day. A day to sleep in, to go through my morning routine leisurely and carefully. It’s a day to read terribly cheesy Amish books and go for walks. It’s a day to sit in my comfy chair hitting the next chapter in a development book while drinking tea. It’s a day to forget the store and lists and do little.
Which means….it’s a day to say no. This is will probably be an issue for me until the end of time. I like to say yes, but there are times to say no. And tonight I had to say no to a friend I wanted to say yes to, but I just couldn’t. Saying yes to that meant hours of “being on” so i had to say no.
This post is SO FAR from a “pat me on the back and give me a high five” because I rested post. It’s more of a “hey friend, when is your rest day. What are you doing to intentionally refill? What brings you calm, clarity and gears you up for the days ahead?”
I know rest is hard and Sabbathing is even harder. But it’s an area I have the opportunity to see some immense personal growth in over the next few months. So, hit me with it. What do you do to rest? When is your scheduled day to reset?
